Paul Manzi grabbed an umbrella from the back of his PSE&G truck and used it to ward off an attacking pit bill, saving a 9-year-old girl and her mom. Manzi downplays his heroism, attributing his actions to his training and his role as a grandfather.
Training can be everything.
It helped Paul Manzi save a 9-year-old girl when he jumped between her and an attacking pit bull with just an umbrella.
Manzi, a PSE&G employee, was stopped at a traffic light on Mount Prospect Avenue in Newark when he saw a little girl running down the street trying to get away from a chasing pit bull. Right behind the dog was a woman, who was running to catch up to the little girl. Manzi said he later learned that the woman was the girl’s mom.
The girl ran around a parked car and the dog followed. The woman, at that point, tripped and fell as the dog reached the girl. Manzi said when the dog reached the girl, he knew the situation was dire. That’s when his training kicked in.
“I ran to the back of my truck to get a stick, and I saw the umbrella,” Manzi said.
That’s all he needed to save the girl.
PSE&G, which trains its workers on how to deal with many job hazards, had brought in a trainer who instructed employees that an umbrella is an effective way to ward off a dog attack.
Bulli Ray’s Pop Action Umbrella Training explained:
The reason the umbrella worked is that when a dog is in prey or chase drive, the dog feels like it is winning, which builds its courage. However, when the chase stops and the dog is confronted, its defense drive kicks in, and now the dog must fight. If the dog can’t get around the umbrella, it loses its courage and runs away. If the dog were more dominant, it would have continued to fight. For this method to be effective, the umbrella needs to be a fast and strong-popping umbrella. When the dog enters defense drive, the sudden pop of the umbrella shocks it. The defense drive includes both fight and flight behaviors. Once the dog perceives that it is losing, flight mode takes over.
